The Office of Research Administration (ORA) has revised UCLA Policies 990 (Use of Animals in Research, Teaching, and Testing) and 992 (Use of Biohazardous Materials and Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules in Research and Teaching Activities) and has placed these policies on the UCLA Administrative Policy website for a 30-day public review and comment period.
The most noteworthy changes to these policies are as follows:
Policy 990 (Use of Animals in Research, Teaching, and Testing):
- Changes the name from “Use of Laboratory Animal Subjects in Research” to “Use of Animals in Research, Teaching, and Testing”
- Reflects department name change for the ARC administrative support office
- Details compliance as a shared responsibility, emphasizing specific duties of the Attending Veterinarian
- Clarifies use of Policy 900 to establish ability to serve as PI
Policy 992 (Use of Biohazardous Materials and Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules in Research and Teaching Activities):
- Changes the name from “Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules” to “Use of Biohazardous Materials and Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules in Research and Teaching Activities”
- Expands IBC scope beyond compliance with the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules (now NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules) to additional biohazardous materials, including infectious agents, select agents and toxins, human and nonhuman primate materials.
- Defines department and individual responsibilities related to the use of biohazardous materials and recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules as used in research and teaching activities.
