After several months of working with multiple stakeholder groups, we are pleased to announce the launch of the new IBC online system, SafetyNet. This system will replace Forms 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 that were previously used for registration of hazardous biological material and recombinant or synthetic nucleic acids. You can access the system at http://safetynet.research.ucla.edu using your UCLA Single Sign-on credentials to create and edit your biological use authorizations (BUAs).

Effective today, all new and renewal applications, and all changes to previously approved submissions, must be submitted using SafetyNet. The system has been populated with a “shell” BUA for your currently approved Forms 1, 2, 3, and 5 and the most current version of these forms and relevant SOPs will be uploaded to the system as attached documents.

If you are newly requesting IBC approval for use of biohazardous materials[1] OR you are due for a renewal of your existing approval:

  • Logon to SafetyNet
  • Select Create BUA
  • Complete the form
[1] Information about what materials require IBC approval is available at http://rsawa.research.ucla.edu/ibc.

If you wish to amend your current IBC approval:

  • Logon to SafetyNet
  • From within My Inbox, click on the Active tab
  • Click on the name of the BUA that you need to amend
  • Select Create Amendment
  • Complete the form, noting that you will need to populate the entire BUA application with all previously approved agents/materials

For amendments that are not urgent, you may wish to consider submitting a new BUA to cover all agents, including those you wish to amend, and obtaining a 3 year approval from that point. Please contact the IBC administrative team at oibc@research.ucla.edu or 310-794-0262 for more information.

The next SafetyNet training will be held Tuesday, October 13, 2015, at 1pm in 11000 Kinross, room 210. More trainings will be announced soon.

We welcome your comments and suggestions for SafetyNet.
