The IBC has developed a new policy titled Use of Glass Pipettes in BSL-2 or Higher Laboratories. This policy addresses the risk that glass pipettes could break and become a sharp which can lead to injury and exposure to hazardous biological materials. Below are the main points from this policy:
- Glass pipettes must be eliminated from all BSL2, BSL2+ and BSL3 laboratories, unless scientifically justified
- Use of glass pipettes and scientific justification must be documented as a deviation request in the PI’s BUA
- The IBC will review each deviation request and determine if the scientific justification provided is adequate to grant an exception to this policy
This policy will also be available at the IBC Policies and Guidance web page.
Please contact the IBC Administrative Staff (firstname.lastname@example.org or 310-794-0262) with any questions and concerns.
