UCLA’s Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) works with Environment, Health & Safety to maintain a set of standardized Biosafety SOPs available to campus research labs. As a part of the 2018 annual review process the IBC approved the following changes to three of these SOPs. If you are currently using the standard Biosafety SOPs, no action by your laboratory is required.
- Aspiration Flask Setup, Use & Maintenance: The requirement for specific quick-connect flask couplings has been replaced with a general requirement that couplings be well-secured.
- Handling Non-Human Primate Cells & Tissues: The SOP has been updated to clarify that B-Virus training and prophylaxis requirements only apply to labs handling macaque materials.
- Flow Cytometry with Biohazardous Materials: Wording has been changed to bring the SOP in line with common language in the flow cytometry field.
The IBC has also approved a new SOP covering disposal of Non-Hazardous Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Waste. If you have any questions or concerns about these changes please contact biosafety@ehs.ucla.edu.
