Bedding must be transported and stored off the floor on pallets, racks, or carts to minimize contamination. Opened bags of bedding should be stored in a container with a tight-fitting lid.

The use of untreated softwood beddings and chips is contraindicated due to their possible effect on animal metabolism. It has been documented that aromatic hydrocarbons from cedar bedding can induce hepatic microsomal enzymes and cytotoxicity.
