An application must be completed each time an investigator wishes to undertake a novel set of experiments involving the use of animal subjects. Because federal regulations require that animal research protocols be reviewed de novo every three years despite the fact that some grants are approved for four or five year periods, investigators are required to complete this form once every three years for continuing projects. An annual continuation application may be submitted for two consecutive years following approval of a new or renewal application.

Please note the following with regard to protocol submission:

Each protocol should reflect an experimental procedure or procedures designed to address a specific hypothesis. While it is not required that separate protocols be submitted for individual grants or funding if the proposed experimental aims and procedures are similar, separate protocols should be submitted for experiments that involve differing experimental goals/hypotheses.
