The ARC recently updated the following policies:

  1.  Euthanasia of Adult Rodents by Physical Methods
Changes were made to bring the Policy in line with the AVMA Guidelines for the Euthanasia of Animals: 2013 Edition and include eliminating the ARC requirement to provide scientific justification for performing physical methods of euthanasia on unanesthetized animals. As a reminder, personnel using physical methods on conscious animals must be identified in the approved research protocol, and the principal investigator must include a plan for training of personnel who are not experienced in these techniques prior to performing euthanasia. Please view the updated Policy at http://ora.research.ucla.edu/OARO/Pages/ARC-policies/euthanasia-decapitation.aspx.
  2. Maintaining Animals in Study Areas
Changes include elimination of the ARC requirement to submit study area logs to OARO each month and clarification on temperature and humidity monitoring. Please view the updated Policy at http://ora.research.ucla.edu/OARO/Pages/ARC-policies/study-areas.aspx.

We encourage investigators to review both policies with their research teams to ensure understanding of the responsibilities and authorities set forth by the ARC.

Please visit the Office of Animal Research Oversight (OARO) website (http://ora.research.ucla.edu/OARO/Pages/index.aspx) and review these policies at your earliest convenience. Please do not hesitate to contact us at 310-206-6308 or oaro@research.ucla.edu if you have any questions.
