PHS Policy requires that institutions base their animal care and use programs on the most current version of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (the Guide). AAALAC also requires compliance with the Guide as a condition for accreditation.

The 8th edition of the Guide was released in December 2010. Over the coming months, the ARC will be reviewing its existing policies to determine the scope and nature of any required changes to the University’s animal care program.

Though the overall format and goals are generally similar, some of the specific recommendations (e.g., space guidelines, temperature ranges) may have changed. Investigators are encouraged to review any relevant sections of the Guide and to consult with OARO if they believe any of the most current recommendations and requirements will adversely affect their research.

PDF and text versions of the Guide can be downloaded for free on the OLAW website.
