Laboratory safety is important to all of us at UCLA. A culture of safety is not only essential to the successful and responsible conduct of research, but also to our educational and training mission as a world-class university. We cannot emphasize enough the importance of maintaining the highest levels of safety in all of our research laboratories and training spaces.

As researchers at UCLA, we have numerous resources and offices designed to enhance the health and safety in our research enterprise and beyond. Our UCLA Office of Environment, Health, and Safety works closely with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and numerous faculty-led safety committees to ensure the health and safety of our entire community, including faculty, students, staff, and visitors.

UCLA has become a leader in the area of research safety through nationally recognized improvements in our laboratory safety program and through the work of the UC Center for Laboratory Safety. A comprehensive guide to improving the culture of safety in academic research institutions has been developed by the APLU Council on Research Task Force on Laboratory Safety, and we encourage all UCLA researchers to consult this important document for guidelines and reinforcement of safe laboratory practices.

We urge you to join us in our continued efforts to enhance a culture of safety as we pursue the high-impact research for which UCLA is so well known.

Sincerely,
Gene Block, Ph.D Ann Karagozian, Ph.D.
Chancellor Interim Vice Chancellor for Research
